At 15 to 1 odds, Jackson Bend (Hear No Evil – Sexy Stockings by Tabasco Cat) has had a tough 2010 when it comes to his 2nd place finishes in this year’s graded stakes races. Nothing but 1st place wins as a 2 year old, this colt has come just shy of that not once but three times. However, don’t think Jackson Bend can’t get his act together in the 136th Kentucky Derby as he could have lost momentum a while ago but instead continued to persevere towards the finish line. He came pretty close to the win in the Holy Bull-G3 in January but just couldn’t get there before Winslow Homer. His last two races resulted in defeat by former Derby favorite Eskendereya.
"(Jackson Bend) goes up there on his own," Nick Zito said about Jackson Bend. "He's consistent. Why wouldn't you (want him in the Derby)? Look at the form on that horse, he's terrific. He's got nine starts, five firsts and four seconds. He didn't take an easy way out as far as the preps go. He ran in the Holy Bull. He came back in the Fountain of Youth, and he came back in the Wood Memorial. He belongs in the Derby, that's for sure."
Owner Robert LaPenta is entrusting trainer Nick Zito with another one of his colts and is hoping he can bring Jackson Bend to his fullest potential. Nick Zito has admitted that he’s a little weary of the post positions that both of his horses drew. Jackson Bend’s unlucky number 13 post position will be a packed spot for the horse but Zito has jockey Mike Smith on his side to bring a little bit of luck.
"Mike Smith, you can't ask for a better jockey right now," Nick Zito said on his chosen jockey. "The timing is good, and that's a good omen, too, because Mike rode my first Derby horse, Thirty Six Red."
