Stately Victor is listed at 30 to 1 odds and really has a lot to prove if he’s going to win the May 1st Kentucky Derby. However, it’s not the first time the colt has shocked oddsmakers when he won the Toyota Blue Grass. Trainer Mike Maker did have to encourage owner Tom Conway to enter the $750,000 G1 race with “some good vodka”. But Tom has a different memory by stating, “I wasn’t in on the decision … and I wasn’t in on the vodka either.”
Bought for $250,000 by Tom and Jack Conway, the father-son team are very hopeful that their horse will bring on more surprises in the Run for the Roses. Jockey Alan Garcia who brought the colt into his Blue Grass win earlier this month will ride Stately Victor. The real question will be if Stately Victor can handle the Churchill Down’s surface coming up on Saturday while starting out of the 6th pole.
