2010 Kentucky Derby Picks: It seems as though the 2010 Kentucky Derby Picks will once again be overshadowed with clouds and rain, leaving a wet track for the scheduled 5 PM ET (4 PM CT/2 PM PT) race. The derby from Churchill Downs will consist of a total of 20 Thoroughbred 3 year-olds. The weather forecast shows a 100 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms that may cause an inch of rain in the morning.
Last year, Mine That Bird won on the damp trail, with 50-1 odds. After front-runner Pioneer of the Nile was
defeated by Mine that Bird, Hall of Fame trainer Baffert, does not know what to expect this year. “You got to be prepared for disappointment,” said Baffert. Hoping for a fourth victory, he is currently training the 3-1 morning line choice, Lookin At Lucky [+350 ML]. Next in line is Sidney’s Candy at [+550 ML] , followed by Awesome Act [+1050 ML], Ice Box [+1200 ML] and Devil May Care at +1150 ML.
But Saturday’s weather may alter these picks, as many of these horses may have to race under foreign circumstances. “A lot of those horses are going to have mud splashed in their face,” Baffert said. “It hits their belly and face. They throw their head up, they lose interest and they get scared.” Most of the Thoroughbreds are from California where they are used to running on synthetic surfaces.
