Online racebook BODOG.com has posted horse racing betting odds on the 2010 Kentucky Derby Predictions Match Up between Devil May Care vs Awesome Act. What do the Sports-Odds.com horse racing betting and Kentucky Derby Predictions experts think about Devil May Care?
Running out of the eleventh gate, Devil May Care is listed as a +120 odds underdog in his 2010 Kentucky Derby Predictions Match Up against Awesome Act. Devil May Care is owned by Glencrest Farm, LLC and her pedigree is Malibu Moon and Kelli's Ransom by Red Ransom. The 2010 Kentucky Derby is now wide open for filly Devil May Care and the rest of the Derby field now that Eskendereya is out of the running.
On Monday trainer Todd Pletcher announced that Devil May Care will run in the Kentucky Derby. The decision was simple to enter the filly, since star jockey John Velazquez will not be riding Eskendereya.
"It was the deciding factor," Pletcher said. "Not only that he was available but why he was available. She is an exceptional filly, and we have always felt that way. Since she's been here (at Churchill Downs) she has trained phenomenally. Obviously, with the big horse (Eskendereya) coming out yesterday, the field is wide open, and she deserves a chance."
Devil May Care will attempt to become the fourth filly to win the Derby, joining Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980), and Winning Colors (1988).
Pletcher is pleased with the filly starting from the 11th post position and stated: “I like her draw. It’s a good spot. The only caution I feel is the fact that she’ll be loading right near the start of it and will have to do some waiting. But other than that, it’s fine.”
Devil May Care has won three of her five career starts, including the 1-mile Grade I Frizette Stakes on October 10th as a 2-year-old. To start the 2010 horse racing season, Devil May Care came in fifth place in the Grade III Silverbulletday on February 20th. In her only other race this year, the filly won the Grade II Bonnie Miss Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 20th.
Pletcher had this to say about the filly putting blinkers on: “We’ve been thinking about doing it since her (last start in the) Bonnie Miss (at Gulfstream March 20). When she made the lead that day she started easing up and looking around. We’ve been training her in them (blinkers) since and now it has become a no-brainer. It will just help her focus.”
What do the Sports-Odds.com horse racing betting and Kentucky Derby Predictions experts think about Awesome Act?
Running out of the sixteenth gate, Awesome Act is listed as a -130 odds favorite in his 2010 Kentucky Derby Predictions Match Up against Devil May Care. Owners Susan Roy and Tom Ludt, president of Vinery Stables have been very happy with the workout performance on Kentucky Derby contender Awesome Act leading up to the 136th Run for the Roses.
The early betting action from horse racing handicappers has poured in on Awesome Act. During his last work on Tuedsay, Awesome Act worked four furlongs in :48 1/5, galloping out five furlongs in a strong 1:00 4/5. Jockey Julien R. Leparoux was pleased with his performance on the wet, sloppy track stating it was “perfect and very smooth. It was a very nice work. He did it very easy. He went over the track very good.”
Leparoux is not concerned with the rain forecasted for Derby day considering Tuesday's great work.
“He loved it, so I won’t be scared about it.” Even the owners chimed in. Tom Ludt mentioned that Awesome Act has done nothing but improve since he’s been at Churchill Downs. “Knock on wood, but this horse keeps getting better and better. The horse is doing everything right.”
And after last year's meltdown of Derby favorite Friesan Fire finishing in 18th place, they all have learned something from the humbling experience.
“One of the things we learned last year is to have a good time and hopefully we’ll get a little racing luck.” Ludt continued, “This horse is hopefully going to rate back because that is what he does well. Julien rode him great in the Gotham. We had no speed in the Wood, but there will be plenty of speed here.”
Awesome Act is ranked 15th in Graded Stakes earnings with $285,000 in two starts as a 3-year-old in 2010. With Leparoux aboard, Awesome Act won the Grade III Gotham Stakes on March 6th and then came in third place in the Grade I Wood Memorial Stakes On April 3rd.
