The hype surrounding early Kentucky Derby favorite Eskendereya scratching from the 136th Run for the Roses was ‘huge’ just like Eskendereya is. Following his scratch due to a slight filling in his left front leg, the Derby field was wide open.

"Yesterday morning (April 24th) I noticed a little bit of filling in his left front leg," superstar trainer Todd Pletcher commented. "We looked at and worked on it overnight but didn't see any improvement. He's too special of a horse to take any chances."

Taking precautions like this puts Pletcher in a league only a few belong in. Leading up to the 2010 Kentucky Derby he had a possible seven horses preparing for the prestigious horse race. Don't feel too bad for him, Pletcher ended up with four contenders; filly Devil May Care [10/1], Super Saver [15/1], Mission Impazible [15/1] and Discreetly Mine [15/1].

Once the big colt was scratched, Lookin at Lucky [4/1] took over as the odds-on-favorite to win with Sidney's Candy [6/1], trained by 3-time Derby winner John W. Sadler right behind him.

The 2009 two-year-old champion Lookin at Lucky needed some ‘luck’ with starting from the worst possible post position in the 136th Kentucky Derby, the dreaded #1 rail post. The last horse to win from the first post was Ferdinand back in 1986. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert had to prepare him well for the dirt race, especially since the majority of his races were on synthetic surfaces in California. Last week in his work, Lookin at Lucky completed six furlongs in 1:12.01 proving the dirt didn't affect him.

Lookin at Lucky has a 6-1-1 record in eight starts. As a three-year-old, he won the Grade II Rebel Stakes (dirt) on March 13th for his first race in 2010. In his last race on April 3rd Lookin at Lucky came in third in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby. Jockey Garrett Gomez will be riding Lookin at Lucky for the ninth time for owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.

Sidney's Candy is entering the 2010 Kentucky Derby off a huge win last month in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, beating out Setsuko and Derby favorite Lookin At Lucky. For that reason alone, some horse racing fans believed he should’ve been the favorite to win today at Churchill Downs. But just like his foe, Sidney’s Candy does not have much experience on dirt tracks, only racing in South California.

Sidney's Candy also started from a terrible post position #20, but trainer John Sadler did not let that lose his focus. "Not the best of draws, what can I say? At least you’re outside and can see what’s going on,” Sadler replied. “It just shows you how tough it is (to win any race, and especially this race). But what are you going to do? That’s how it works. You’ve just got to deal with what you’ve got and do the best you can with it."

Sired by Candy Ride out of the Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange, Sidney's Candy broke a new track record for five and one half furlongs (1:02.71) in his maiden win on August 22, 2009, at Del Mar. In 2010 as a three-year-old, Sidney's Candy won all three of his graded stakes races, earning $630,000 with jockey Joe Talamo at the realms.
