Kentucky Derby 2010: Devil May Care 10 to 1 Derby Picks

by Rachel Quinn on Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Kentucky Derby 2010 Devil May Care 10 to 1 Derby Picks: Making her 2010 Kentucky Derby debut is filly Devil May Care and she’s looking to give the colts a run for their money in the May 1st race. Go to SPORTSBOOK.com to get all of the current betting odds on all of your Kentucky Derby favorites.

Coming in at 10 to 1 odds, Devil May Care (Malibu Moon – Kelli’s Ranson by Red Ransom) is another one of trainer Todd Pletcher’s horses who will be a contender in the Run for the Roses. Pletcher chose to pull his filly out of the Kentucky Oaks race to add her to the May 1st Derby race after having to pull out colts Rule, Interactif, and odds favorite Eskendereya. His remaining Derby hopefuls joining Devil May Care are Super Saver, Mission Impazible, and Discreetly Mine. John Velazquez who has ridden Devil May Care in all but one of her races will be riding her again in Saturday’s race after Eskendereya was announced to be out.

“She would have to run just as hard Friday against 13 fillies in the Oaks, as she would on Saturday against 19 colts,” said Devil May Care trainer Todd Pletcher. “I think she fits very well. If you look at her Bonnie Miss, where she ran greenly after making the lead and still ran faster than the Florida Derby two races later, she’s shown her races are competitive with the colts. I’ve had the opportunity to train her against the colts and she’s done very well.”

Devil May Care will be starting her first race with male contenders out of the 11th start post and it looks as though many will be cheering this filly on during the first leg of the Triple Crown. Should she win, she’ll be the fourth female to finish 1st in the Kentucky Derby. However, Todd Pletcher is no stranger to victory in the Triple Crown with a win in the 2007 Belmont Stakes with filly Rags to Riches. Her 3-0-0 record of five races shows promise with her last race resulting with a win in the Bonnie Miss-G2. In November 2009, she proved that she didn’t like synthetic surfaces after she brought in a 11th place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies-G1. Let’s hope that she keeps her temper in check as well on May 1st and doesn’t pull a repeat of February’s Silverbulletday-G3 in which she acted up at the start and earned herself a 5th place finish.
