Twice the Appeal, son of Successful Appeal and Double Boarded, remains an unknown commodity as a racer, but fortunately for the colt, as well as it owners Rusty Brown, Victor Flores, and Henry Hernandez, jockey Calvin Borel is a Churchill Downs legend. Borel, who will have Twice the Appeal's mount today, has garnered the horse a good deal of backing heading into this afternoon's race. Sports Betting Odds presently have the colt listed at +500 moneyline odds to win the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Twice the Appeal needed seven attempts
to break his maiden, but since completing that difficult milestone (at least in his case), the colt has gone on to record two victories and one second place finish.
Twice the Appeal has never competed in a Grade 1 or 2 stakes race, though. His only real impressive showing against any sort of viable competition came in late March when he won the Grade 3 Sunland Derby Stakes (1 1/8 miles).
Despite the colt's lackluster resume, many feel it has a decent chance to pull off the win today because of jockey Calvin Borel. Borel, who guided 50 to 1 longshot Mine That Bird to Derby glory in 2009, has been aboard three of the last four Derby winners.
Further enhancing Twice the Appeal's appeal is the fact that the horse drew gate three for today's start. Typically trainers and jockeys hope to avoid a position that far inside, but Borel is an exception.
The Cajun rider is notorious for getting his horse to the rail, suffering space in order to make the shortest trip around the track.
All indications are that Twice the Appeal is a late stalker in the same vein as Mine That Bird, which means Borel stands a decent chance at becoming the only four time Derby winning jockey later this evening.
