After receiving some bad luck in the May 1st Kentucky Derby with a post 1 draw in which resulted in a 6th place finish, things could be looking up for this colt with a post No. Lucky 7 draw for the 2010 Preakness Stakes.
“I am so relieved,’’ said trainer Bob Baffert of drawing a 7 post. “As soon as the 1 went by [drawn by Aikenite], I said, ‘That’s good. I wanted the 7, 8, or 9, but you still have to get away well and everything.’ I’m just glad that the horse finally drew a decent post position. Now he’s going to have to run hard. The way he has been training, I don’t see it not happening.’’
There’s no doubt that Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike – Private Feeling by Belong To Me) is an accomplished horse with an overall record of 6-1-1 of nine races but he’ll need to be completely comfortable on the dirt track at the Pimlico in Baltimore to beat out the top contenders. Two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, trainer Bob Baffert replaced jockey Garrett Gomez who’s been the only jockey to ride Lookin At Lucky with Martin Garcia. We’ll see if a good post position and new jockey will get the win over Super Saver in the May 15th race.
