"We always thought he had a lot of potential," Margolis replied. "During the whole course of the Fair Grounds meet, we were trying to get into the Kentucky Derby, but just didn't have enough earnings. When we saw his race on Derby Day [optional claimer win] we all sat down and thought about the Belmont. He's a long-striding colt, and it doesn't seem like the distance is a problem. Every time Jamie [Theriot] gets off, he says the horse never seems to get tired. It's just a question of whether he can step up to Grade 1 competition."
Last Sunday under exercise rider Loren Diego, Stay Put got his final major work in, breezing an easy half mile in 50.70 seconds, galloping out five furlongs in 1:05.41. "I started off slow, let him feel the track, let him pick it up at his own pace, and at the end he was rolling," Diego stated.
Stay Put was bred by Reklein Stables and has a pedigree from Broken Vow and O. K. Mom by Dixieland Band. He holds an impressive 3-0-2 record in seven starts and has never run poorly, improving throughout each race. Even his two fifth place finishes in the Grade II Risen Star and Grade II Louisiana Derby, Stay Put picked off horses in the final home stretch. Jockey Jamie Theriot will be on the mount of Stay Put for the third time.
