Big Brown Trainer Suspended for Drug Use: earlier this month, Big Brown’s trainer Rick Dutrow had placed all the blame on his jockey for Big Brown’s historic Triple Crown collapse in at the Belmont Stakes. Now, all the blame is being placed on him, for the illegal use of a drug on another horse he currently trains. Big Brown’s infamous trainer, Rick Dutrow, has been placed under a 15-day suspension by Kentucky racing officials after another one of his horses failed a drug test, twice.
According to John Veitch, chief steward of the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority, there were two separate drug tests administered on 8-year-old Salute the Count. 
The results of these tests revealed that the horse had twice the allowable limit of Clenbuterol in his system after finishing second in the Aegon Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on May of last year.
What exactly is Clenbuterol, and why is it banned in horseracing? John Veitch explained: "It's a respiratory enhancer… it's become quite popular in racing medication because it's used to train on."
Under normal circumstances, human beings who suffer from asthma and other respiratory problems often use Clenbuterol. Veitch also said that the use of the drug in horses has grown because it can increase lung capacity.
It is considered a Class B drug, and though use of the drug is legal under Kentucky racing guidelines, it is ilegal for it to be administered 72 hours before a race.
In a phone interview, the colorful trainer admitted he sometimes uses the drug in other horses and was previously reprimanded by the New York Racing and Wagering Board for a similar infraction several years ago. On that same telephone interview, Dutrow added: "I really haven't had any problems with it."
