Trainer Todd Pletcher has put a lot of effort in this thoroughbred and he’ll see if all of his hard work has paid off soon. With the last generation of Super Saver not showing much promise, his grandfather on his mom’s side was a true champion. Now retired at 21 years old, A. P. Indy brought in mostly 1st place finishes in 1991 & 1992 in G1 races. Let’s just hope he can follow in those footsteps.
"He's only had one race this year (third in the Tampa Bay Derby on March 13) and the thing you hope for is to move forward in a race like this," Elliot Walden who oversees Super Saver for WinStar Farm said before going into the Arkansas Derby-G1. "He did that and we just hope he puts it all together in the Kentucky Derby."
Starting his career in August of 2009, Super Saver came in 2nd in the MSW at Saratoga Race Course in New York with jockey John Velazquez, September brought in a 1st place win in the MSW at Belmont Park in New York with jockey Ramon Dominguez, October added a 4th place finish to his resume in the Champagne-G1 at Belmont Park with jockey Velazquez, and rounded out 2009 with another 1st place win in the Kentucky Jockey Club-G2 with jockey Calvin Borel. 2010 hasn’t been too bad for this Colt with March bringing in a 3rd place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby-G3 Tampa Bay Downs with jockey Dominguez and a 2nd place finish in April in the Arkansas Derby-G1 at Oakland Park with jockey Borel. Let’s see if he can add a 1st place finish for 2010.

At 75 to 1 odds, owners of Tempted to Tapit – Gainesway Stable are one of the hopefuls to see their thoroughbred get a spot in this coveted race. Trained by Steve Klesaris and bred in Kentucky by Mike Sloan, let’s hope this Colt does better than his father – Tapit – who only had a total of four races with one 1st place finish all in 2004. However, his grandfather on his mom’s side is one to live up to. Editor’s Note had a total of 10 races in 1996 in which he finished 1st through 4th in most as well as two more 3rd and 4th place finishes in 1995.
"We had an outside post and it turned out the race was pretty fast," said trainer Steve Klesaris after Tempted to Tapit’s third-place finish in the Sunland Derby. "It doesn't look like we'll have enough graded earnings to get into the Kentucky Derby and I wouldn't want to go just for the sake of being in the race even if we could get in. There are plenty of nice races out there for 3-year-olds the rest of the year."
So what has Tempted to Tapit accomplished thus far? In November of 2009, he came in 2nd in the MSW out of Philadelphia Park with jockey Justin Shepherd and brought in 2010 on a good note with a 1st place win in the MSW out of the Aqueduct in New York with jockey David Cohen. The two most recent races were in February in the Risen Star-G2 out of Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans where he placed 2nd and placed 3rd in late March at the Sunland Derby-G3 in Sunland Park, NM both with jockey David Cohen.

Fantasy Lane Stable who found Uptowncharlybrown in Kentucky from breeder Juan Bruno and Rose Hill Farm is hoping to get a chance at the first leg of the Triple Crown on May 1st. Although not as seasoned as his dad, Limestone who had several races between 2003 and 2005, this young Colt will have his chance to show if he can do just as good or even better. We’ll see if trainer Alan Seewald has done his part to see this horse all the way through.
“Owning a racehorse is like owning a yacht: expensive to buy, impossible to maintain and a bottomless pit into which to throw your money. It is a lot like gambling in the stock market,” said Mike Milan who is one of 59 race fans that make up ownership of Fantasy Lane Stables. “Except that this investment wears fancy silks, never stops eating and with luck, can run like the wind. Do you know of a portfolio that might one day enter the starting gate at Belmont? I do, and as Orsini said, “We are just ordinary people,” who, in 2004 looked for inexpensive ways to get into the racing game.”
Uptowncharlybrown who's coming in at 75 to 1 odds rounded out 2009 as well as started 2010 with two 1st place finishes at the MSW and Pasco both out of Tampa Bay Downs. The 3-year-old Colt then placed 3rd in the Sam F. Davis-G3 in February and 5th in March at the Tampa Bay Derby-G3 also out of Tampa Bay Downs and all with jockey Daniel Centeno.
Milan added, “There are ways to do it at a reasonable price. You can spend from $1,000 to $10,000 and buy into a partnership. We have pretty much broken even over that time. I pinch myself just watching (Uptowncharlybrown) run. I get the same feeling just thinking about him running at Belmont. I have a part ownership in a potential Grade I racehorse. It is a dream come true.”

Uh Oh Bango was listed at 50 to 1 odds has pulled out of the race due to an injury. Uh Oh Bango is based out of Arizona at the Triple AAA Ranch. Trained by R Kory Owens, this 3-year-old Colt has brought in three 2nd place wins at the Delta Jackpot-G3 in Louisianna, Iroquois-G3 in Kentucky, and the Clever Trevor in Oklahoma. Adding to those are two 1st place wins at the Prairie Meadows Freshman and MSW both in Iowa all with jockey Glenn Corbett in 2009.
"He's going to have surgery sometime this week in Oklahoma, where a lot of people at Oaklawn send their horses," trainer Kory Owens said after Uh Oh Bango fractured a left front cannon bone.
Owens further stated, "He cooled out okay after the race, but the next day, we could tell something was not really right. He'll have a screw put in it. He should be out four to six months."

Yawanna Twist who’s coming in at 75 to 1 odds has big hopes of getting out there on May 1st for the Kentucky Derby. With only a total of four races under his saddle, this 3-year-old Colt has placed in the top three in all of those races. Starting back in late 2009, Yawanna Twist raced MSW at Aqueduct in Queens in which he finished 1st with jockey Ramon Dominguez. 2010 started off good with him placing 1st in the Allow again at the Aqueduct in Queens with Dominguez and followed a 2nd place finish in the Gotham-G3 with jockey Edgar Prado. His final race was also with Prado on April 3rd in the Illinois Derby-G3 out of the Hawthorne Race Course and placed 2nd.
“I’m very happy. I was right behind the winner and when the winner got through I followed him,” jockey Edgar Prado said after the G3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct.
Seasoned trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. who failed to bring home the Triple Crown win in 2008 with another thoroughbred is hoping that this Colt owned by Steel Your Face Stable will bring him much needed redemption. Out of New York, Yawanna Twist was bred from father Yonaguska who had three of his own 1st place finishes back in 2001. Will he live up to those expectations?
Prado further stated, “It was the first time I had to really get in and ride him hard and I think he relaxed and took a couple strides and figured out what to do. He’s a very nice horse and I’m very happy with [the race].”
