138th Kentucky Derby 2012

2012 Kentucky Derby Results: I’ll Have Another takes it and becomes the first win in the history of the Derby from Post 19. Jockey Mario Gutierrez was very emotional after the race when he was interviewed. A total of $2 million dollar purse was up for grabs at Churchill Downs today with the 2012 Kentucky Derby winner getting $1.4 million. See the latest Horse Racing Odds.

Ashton Kutcher, Debra Messing, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Lindsey Vonn were all spotted attending the 2012 Kentucky Derby. Mary J. Blige sung the National Anthem with over 100k spectators watching from the infield, all of which paid $40 dollars to see the 2012 Derby.

Calvin Borel has won 3 of the last 5 Kentucky Derby races and the question before the race started was whether the veteran jockey would win the Run for the Roses on Take Charge Indy. In 2007, Borel won on Street Sense. Then in 2009 a day after winning the Kentucky Oaks on Rachel Alexandar, Calvin won the Derby on 50 to 1 long shot Mine That Bird. He followed that the next year by winning the Run for the Roses in 2010 on Super Saver.

Borel was not the only jockey looking for their fourth Kentucky Derby win. Kent Desormeaux won the Derby in 2008 on Big Brown. Eight years earlier he won the 2000 Derby on Fusaichi Pegasus and his first win at Churchill Downs happened in 1998 on Real Quiet. In the 2012 Kentucky Derby Desormeaux got the mount on Dullahan.

Joel Einhorn bet his $100,000 to WIN on the horse from the 11th post Alpha at 20 to 1 odds. Einhorn is from Flushing, New York and was randomly selected as the winner of the Kentucky Derby DreamBet contest, which gave him the opportunity to make a $100,000 wager to WIN on the race.

Daddy Nose Best Odds 2012 Kentucky Derby Predictions: Daddy Nose Best has won two straight Grade 3 Preps, the Sunland Derby at Sunland Park and El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Park in California. The colt has finished in the money in three of his last four races, counting the two mentioned and in the Summer Stakes at Woodbine, also a G3 event. However, didn’t look too good in his only G1 race, the 2011  Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Daddy Nose Best is trained by Steve Asmussen who trained back to back horse of the year’s Curlin and Rachel Alexandra. Aboard Daddy Nose Best will be Garrett Gomez out of Post 10.

Daddy Nose Best is owned by Cathy and Bob Zopllars. The Zollars have previously been represented in the Kentucky Derby with Fifty Stars and Private Emblem . In addition to those stable stars the Zollars have also campaigned top stakes winners Real Dandy and Thiskyhasnolimit. Post time for the 2012 Kentucky Derby will go at 6:20 p.m. and will be televised on NBC.

Alpha is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin who learned the ropes from Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. McLaughlin went on his own training in the United Arab Emirates before returning to the USA with his own stable of horses. He has one win in a Triple Crown leg with Jazil in 2006 and scored big in the 2006 Breeders Cup with Horse of the Year Invasor who also won the Dubai World Cup in 2007. On board is Jockey Rajiv Maragh from Jamaica. His first winner came aboard Pricedale Kid in 2004 at Tampa Bay Downs.

I’ll Have Another is trained by Doug O’Neill and will be beneath Jockey Mario Gutierrez who was the colts mount in recent wins. Sabercat is a closer and today’s length might just prove to be what he needs. He qualified for the Kentucky Derby with his win in the G3 Delta Downs Jackpot but struggled at in the G2 Rebel  Stakes at Oaklawn in March. Then Sabercat finished in No. 3 behind Bodemeister in the Arkansas Derby. The colt will have a clear track coming out of the 18th post. If bettors are looking for a good longshot to build their trifecta around; Sabercat is a good choice.

Union Rags trainer Michael Matz who last won with Barbaro in 2006 hopes for a second Derby win coming off 9/2 Horse Racing Odds. Union Rags will be beneath jockey Julien Leparoux who will be looking for his first Derby win, but has three Breeders Cup victories. Union Rags was defeated his last time out finishing third in the Grade-1 Florida Derby behind winner Take Charge Indy, ridden by Calvin Borel. Gate-3 was the lucky gate for Borel and Take Charge Indy at Florida, the same gate draw he gets for the Derby. Take Charge Indy is a good value under Borel from the 3-post at 10/1 odds.

Creative Cause  will start from the 8th post, a great draw for trainer Mike Harrington and jockey Joel Rosario. The colt finished second at Grade-1 Santa Anita Derby behind I’ll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez. Creative Cause has a great chance to finish in the money with a post advantage over Bodemeister and Union Rags on his inside. Following the draw, Creative Cause was installed coming off at 12/1 Horse Racing Odds while Doug O’Neil trained I’ll Have Another is at 12/1 from No. 19.

Todd Pletcher was a happy man drawing Gate 15 for his speed horse Gemologist. Pletcher’s colt is installed at 6/1 morning line on the outside of Hansen, listed at 10/1 from No. 14. Dullahan, trained by Dale Romano was looking to avoid a far outside draw and got it with No. 5. This is a great spot for the Blue Grass Stakes winner and odds makers agree listing him at 8/1.

Hansen is trained by Mike Maker who cut his teeth in the business under Hall of Fame trainer D Wayne Lukas. Maker is looking for his first Kentucky Derby winner. Hansen will be beneath one of the best jockey’s in the business in Ramon Dominguez. Top Mounts for Dominguez have included: Havre de Grace, Hansen, Get Stormy, Gio Ponti and Stay Thirsty. Dominguez rode Hansen to the a win in the 2011  Breeders Cup Juvenile. Hansen is owned by Dr. Kendall Hansen & Sky Chai Racing.

Hansen, the 2011 champion two-year-old colt, is a genetic marvel in some respects. Though he is by one of today’s notable sires in Tapit, Hansen is easily the most accomplished performer from a female line that had been virtually dormant for six generations.

According to TopBet.com, Liason is the least likely horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Trained by one of the most successful trainers in the business in Bob Baffert, Liason had the misfortune of drawing a 20-post position and as a consequence, has been lined at 50/1 odds. What 50/1 translates to in dollars and cents is +5,000 where a $100 wager will net $5,000. Is Liason worthy of the risk? Probably not but miracles do happen. Animal Kingdom won in 2011 as a 20/1 underdog but that pales to Mine That Bird as a 50/1 winner in 2010.

Creative Cause is from the stables of owner Heinz Steinmann and is trained by Mike Harrington. Jockey Joel Rosario made his first appearance in the 2010 Kentucky Derby aboard Make Music for Me finishing fourth. Rosario, of the Dominican Republic, won his first graded stakes race in 2008 aboard Zappa in the San Pasquel (GII) and his first Breeders’ Cup race in 2009 with Dancing in Silks. His top mounts have included Creative Cause, Acclimation, Blind Luck, Harmonious, Dakota Phone, Dubawi Heights, Twirling Candy and Zazu.

The son of two top performers with seven-figure bankrolls, Creative Cause is by European champion and leading international sire Giant’s Causeway, and out of Grade 1-winning racemare Dream of Summer. He should have enough stamina to negotiate the classic distance.

Originally expected to bypass the Kentucky Derby in favor of the Preakness, the swift Trinniberg will instead take a position in the starting gate for Churchill Downs’ 1 1/4-mile classic. Trinniberg will attempt to win the Derby in his first ever race of this 1 1/2 mile length.

Trinniberg has inherited the family legacy of being a solid one-turn performer. His sire, Teuflesberg, won the seven-furlong Woody Stephens at Belmont Park and the six-furlong Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds. However, he did stretch his speed over one mile to take the Southwest at Oaklawn, and finished a close fourth in the first ever edition of the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass at Keeneland contested over Polytrack.
