Rafael Nadal continues his quest for a fourth consecutive major championship when he takes on American Ryan Sweeting later tonight. The second round match is scheduled to get underway at 6:00pm ET on Wednesday, January 19th. 2011 Australian Open Betting Odds have the top seeded Nadal listed as a -10.5 against the spread (games) favorite and the Over/Under set at 25 games.
Rafael Nadal, who was ousted in the
quarterfinals of last year's Australian Open, wasted little time justifying his top seed. Nadal was up 6-0, 5-0 on Brazilian Marcus Daniel in the opening round before Daniel retired from the match. The Spaniard smashed 25 winners to Daniel's zero in the first two sets.
Nadal, who captured his first and only title at Melbourne in 2009, is seeking his fourth straight major championship. If he is able to pull it off, he will have earned his 10th career Grand Slam. Of course, Nadal's injury induced retirement against Murry in last year's quarters would prohibit the feat from being classified as a true slam, hence the quest is being referred to as the "Rafa Slam".
The top ranked Nadal, who has never faced Sweeting, already owns a career Grand Slam, having won each of the four majors at least once.
Twenty-three year old Ryan Sweeting advanced to the second round of a major for just the second time in his career with a first round win over Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Sweeting, who won three qualifying matches in order to get into the tournament, landed 84 of his 113 first serves in dispatching Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.
Sweeting, who reached the second round of the 2006 U.S. Open, is making his first career appearance at the Australian Open.
Rafael Nadal vs Ryan Sweeting 2011 Australian Open Betting Odds:
