2010 Australian Open: Serena Williams vs Carla Suarez Navarro Betting Odds: As world No.1 Serena Williams [-7 (-135) or -4000 ML] chases her fifth Australian Open title, the Australian press isn’t so impressed with the American tennis player, as she makes her way into the tournament’s third round versus 32nd seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro [+7 (-105) or +1100 ML]. This women’s singles, third round match is scheduled to take place at Hisense Arena, tonight beginning at 8:30 PM ET (5:30 PM PT) on ESPN-2.
This week, as Williams has made her way to the press room following her matches, the 11-time Grand Slam champ has been having some difficulty dealing with the Aussie press, as both sides appear to be annoyed by one another. For example, “The Australian” recently wrote a piece where the defending champ was heavily criticized.
Clearly trying to express a dislike for the way Serena Williams carries herself, the author depicts her excessive on-court “bling” and how she tends to flaunt real diamonds as if they were Cubic Zirconia.
“She wore a diamond necklace that could be seen on the moon,” The Australian piece states. “The diamonds were real, she reassured us, the price not mentioned. … This is the sort of irrelevant nonsense that makes up most of Williams' media conferences. Ostentatious, empty and hardly provocative. She has rarely said anything that might cause a journalist to be bewildered by wit or insight.”
But he doesn't stop there, as she was once again asked about what happend at the 2009 US Open. Williams was asked about her outburst in the Big Apple, which lead to a record-breaking ($92,000) fine for the 28-year-old from Compton, California. When asked about the threats she made to a line judge during her semifinals match versus Kim Clijsters at the Flushing Meadows, Serena said:
“I just think that the whole incident was a learning experience. And I actually think it was good that it happened, that I got fined, because at the end of the day I'm raising money to help other people who I probably would have done it but not in that way, and I probably wouldn't have raised it.”
The writer follows her response with, “And we are not sure what it means either.”
