Roger Federer advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open for a 10th consecutive time earlier this week. His prize? A meeting with Spain's Tommy Robredo, the ATP's 52nd ranked men's singles player. The pair will hook up for the 10th time in their careers at approximately 9:45pm ET tonight. 2011 Australian Open Betting Odds have Federer listed a -9 against the spread favorite and a -10000 moneyline favorite. The Over/Under on games is set at 28.
Roger Federer was forced to grind through
a grueling second round match with Gilles Simon, but he eventually prevailed over the Frenchman, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3. Federer had no such trouble in his third round match, mowing through Xavier Malisse in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
Federer did not produce his best service game in dispatching Malisse, hitting just 53 of his 83 first serve opportunities. However, Federer overcame his uncharacteristic woes by hitting 20 more winners than his Belgium opponent.
Federer, who has not been ousted prior to the Australian Open semifinals since 2003, owns a 9-0 record against Robredo. The two last met at the U.S. Open in 2009, where Federer won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. Tonight's match will mark their second showdown at Melborne. The Swiss master defeated Robredo 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Australian Open.
Robredo, who has never advanced past the quarterfinals in 40 Grand Slam appearances, reached the fourth round at Melbourne for the fourth time with his win over Ukrainian Sergiv Stakhovsky on Thursday.
Robredo lost the first set 5-7, but triumphed in the next three 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 thanks to Stakhovsky's sloppy play. The Kiev native finished the match with 48 unforced errors.
