Davis Cup thrashing for Great Britain

by Jay Harrington on Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Great Britain are predictably experiencing a poor Davis Cup tennis tournament against a strong Argentina side.

The South Americans easily won the opening singles with David Nalbandian and Augustin Calleri seeing off the respective Jamie Baker and Alex Bogdanovic. The result puts them 2-0 in front.

The three day Davis Cup event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is being played on clay – by far the home side´s favoured surface.

Although it probably makes little difference what surface they play on as the Argentinians are far superior technically.

Davis Cup thrashing for Great BritainNalbandian is ranked nine in the world – more than 200 places above his Davis Cup opponent Baker.

"I wanted to win quickly but it wasn't the greatest match on my part," said Nalbandian. "We are starting off the best way possible."

Jamie Murray and Ross Hutchins go up against Nalbandian and Jose Acasuso in the doubles. Then we have the reverse singles on Sunday finish the best-of-five match.

It will be a huge surprise if GB win a match.
