Italian tennis player Giorgio Galimberti has been axed from the sport for placing bets on the outcome of games. It´s another betting scandal to hit tennis. The Italian Davis Cup player was judged to be guilty of betting on games which runs against  the ATP's anti-corruption programme. Giorgio Galimberti hasn't enjoyed the most successful of careers. He has won only one doubles title on the has a career-high singles rank of 115. As well as the ban he has been fined US$35,000.

Gayle David Bradshaw, ATP executive vice president said: "The ATP's Tennis Anti Corruption Program is clear in regards to gambling on tennis matches by ATP players, player associates and staff.

"It unambiguously states that gambling on any form of tennis matches will not be tolerated. Everyone connected to the ATP Tour has a duty to abide by the rules."

It has not been revealed what size stakes Giorgio Galimberti was gambling on games.  Galimberti has not featured on the tour recently. His tennis is now mainly played on the second-tier Challenger Tour. Other Italian players have hit the headlines for betting on tennis. Potito Starace, Daniele Bracciali and Alessio Di Mauro received bans in 2007.
