Next up, Roger Federer [-1400 ML] will be taking on a tough opponent in sports betting odds underdog Marcos Baghdatis [+675 ML] tonight in the desert, but somehow, that’s not what people want to talk about in the tennis world.
It seems like the biggest topic of conversation these days is about the “awkward” and heated rivalry between two of the game’s greatest: Pete Sampras vs Andre Agassi. While playing a charity/fund-raising match for the people of Haiti “Hit for Haiti” at Indian Wells, the exhibition match between Pete Sampras/Roger Federer vs. Andre Agassi/Rafael Nadal quickly took an ugly turn.
It all started when Sampras did an impersonation of Agassi’s pigeon-toe walk right before one of his serves. With each player wearing a microphone for the crowd to hear, it was Agassi’s turn to give his best impression of his longtime rival. Taking a page out of his tell-all book, Agassi began mocking Sampras for his reputation as a “bad tipper”.
Letting his racket drop to the ground, Agassi turned his empty pockets inside-out. “I don’t have any money,” Agassi said, “No, wait. I’ve got a dollar!” Then, a visibly embarrassed Sampras said that it could be worse, that there are worse things. “It’s better than being a valet driver and you pulling up,” Agassi said. It all pretty much ended when Sampras served one of his triple-digit serves aimed right at the shiny baldhead of Andre Agassi.
Meanwhile, Federer and Nadal didn’t know where to stick themselves. “This rivalry is intense, man, I mean,” a nervous Federer said drawing laughter from the crowd. In retrospect, what occurred in front of almost 20,00 people was nothing to laugh at in Federer’s eyes.
“There was definitely an awkward moment, a bit of a heated moment,” Federer said. “It’s a bit unfortunate, but that stuff kind of happens. It’s a pity if that’s what grabs the limelight and not the event itself, you know.”
As for the enemies, Andre Agassi spoke out and offered an apology: "It was out of line. It was inappropriate. The night was on fire. We were all having fun. I was trying to be comedic. I only had a split second to make a decision. I went for it and it fell flat. I was trying to get past it, but Pete didn't really let me get past it. He didn't really roll with it. I've texted Pete to ask him if I can apologize in person.
"The joke fell flat and I'm sorry. My hope was that the night was still enjoyable. My whole book is about living and learning, and I guess you never stop."
