It is now day 6 of this 2008 French Open Roland Garros, and for the first time in this entire tournament, is the weather totally on the player’s side as it is just a glorious day in Paris. However, it has been anything but, for American women’s tennis. With just less than 24 hours after 7th ranked American James Blake was upset by a huge second round underdog, comes even a bigger upset. Going into the third round of play at the French, #5 seeded Serena Williams was a -900 betting odds favorite against (+500) #27 seeded Katarina Srebotnik. After looking very dominant on her first two matches, by straight-set wins, Serena took on the 27th world ranked player K. Srebotnik. The flamboyant American, Williams, did not look right from the get go as her unforced errors costed her Paris. Coming into the French, she odds on favorite to advance to the women's singles finals, with the absence of (now retired) Justine Henin. However, early Friday morning (on the west), Serena was absolutely overmatched by a more aggressive, more asserted Katarina Srebotnik. This 3rd round loss marks the first time in 22 matches in a row, that Serena Williams doesn’t reach at least the semi-finals at Stade Roland Garros. Serena was eliminated in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). Serena’s sister, Venus, will now become the American’s last hope in this year’s French Open R.G, unless Bethanie Mattek (currently in a battle with No. 1 seeded Maria Sharapova; tied at a set apiece after two) can pull off the huge upset.
