Top Seeded Ana Ivanovic Eliminated from Wimbledon 2008: things continue to take unexpected turns at The All England Club, as the upsets continue. Just 1 day after No. 3 seeded Maria Sharapova, No. 6th seeded Andy Roddick, and No. 9th seeded James Blake suffered early tournament departures from England, the unexpected has happened. The No. 1 seeded player in the world, and 2008 French Open Roland Garros Grand Slam winner, Ana Ivanovic, has also been sent packing. Ana Ivanovic was a –800 betting odds favorite against Jie Zheng +475. The top seeded Serbian, Ivanovic was never able to recover after getting out to a slow start, as she is defeated in straight sets: 1-6, 4-6. Zheng took control of the match from the start, and never relinquished. The Chinese underdog played just a perfect match, as she just got into a great rhythm that Ivanovic just couldn’t break. This victory is Zheng’s biggest of her career, and she now moves on to the final 16 at Wimbledon. Ivanovic’s demise was strangely enough, her serve: Ivanovic averaged just 46% winner on her first serve, to Zheng’s 67%. Another discrepancy between these two ladies was the break point conversions: Ivanovic was just 1-7 for 14%, while Zheng was 4-7 for 57%. And finally, Zheng was just the more aggressive and efficient player, as their net approach winners show; Ivanovic: 57%, and Zheng: 100%.
