The Williams sisters are unstoppable on grass! That was clear on Thursday at Wimbledon 2009 when firstly Serena overcame a resilient Elena Dementieva in a classic match before her sister destroyed the supposed ‘Worlds Number One’ Dinara Safina in just 51 minutes! So the sisters take to the stage on Saturday for what will be their 4th Centre Court Ladies finals meeting with Venus looking to level matters up at 2-2 and follow-up her triumph from last year.
The odds at Bodog.com have taken a major swing. Serena has been the futures favourite throughout the entire event until her sisters destruction of Safina was witnessed by all. Venus will now start as favourite for the crown at -120 odds with Serena available at +100 in a tight market.
Admittedly Serena had a ‘harder day at the office’ on Thursday but with Venus playing throughout the competition with a heavily strapped knee I am going to take Serena to come through and extend her lead to 3-1 over her sister in Wimbledon finals. Big games can really raise the standards for tennis players and they don’t come much bigger than the battle that Serena won over her Russian rival. She faced break points at crucial times yet her serve kept her in the game along with a run of failed player challenges by Dementieva. Whether the Russian can raise her game to that level on grass again will be a question for the future but she certainly did her part in getting Serena ‘on her game’ in time for the final.
Venus did not even break sweat against an opponent who continues to frustrate in big games. 16 unforced errors form Safina against 1 from Venus tells the story in a match that is easily forgotten. Over the years there has always been the talk of matches between the sisters being decided off the court. Don’t believe in any of that nonsense and look forward to what should be another monster power battle on Centre Court for the Wimbledon 2009 Ladies Finals on Saturday July 4th, 2009 at 8:00 AM EST!
