Roddick Upsets Murray to Reach Finals vs Federer 2009 Wimbledon Results: This afternoon in London, the world’s sixth ranked, Andy Roddick shocked the tennis world by defeating the 3rd seeded Andy Murray to reach the Wimbledon Finals against Roger Federer.
The much-anticipated Wimbledon Results Semi Final battle between Roddick, the American and Murray, the Scot, became a heated battle of wills as neither man wanted to give in. As expected, each man’s serve was going to play a big key on the outcome of the match, and it did. Both Murray and Roddick fired bullets during their service games and stacked aces well in the double-digits, as it quickly became a seesaw battle.
Surprisingly, Roddick drew first blood, taking the opening set 6-4 on the strength of a critical break point. The American also won more points than the Scot, 32-26, and also won the aces battle, 4-3.
In the second set, Murray quickly picked things up, knotting the match at one set apiece (6-4). Murray’s success started with his serve, beating out Roddick 7 aces to 5. Murray also converted 100% of his of his points on first serve, 15/15, against Roddick’s 14/18 (78%).
In the third set, Roddick held his end of the bargain while jumping all over his opponent’s service, converting on 1 of 4 break chances to Murray’s 1/5 for 20%. But the aces continued to fly at a frantic pace in that set, as Murray came back from a 3-1 deficit to take it to a decisive 3rd set tiebreak.
At that point, with the set nearing the 1 hour-mark (yes, I said the SET!), Murray had the advantage in the aces department, registering 9 on the set alone (19 for the match) to Roddick’s 6 third set aces and a total of 15.
In the tiebreak, both men continued to struggle to give in to one another, as the third set alone surpassed one hour. After going back and fourth and back and fourth again, Roddick finally claimed the 3rd set, 7-6 on the strength of timely aces and 49 points won to 48 of Murray’s, so close!
The fourth set almost became a replay, as Roddick and Murray blasted over 100-miles per hour serves, taking the aces battle to 21 for the American and 25 for the Scot. Knotted up at 6-6, they once again entered another exciting tiebreak, with Roddick having the chance to move to the finals to take on Federer.
Early in the tiebreak, Roddick jumped out to w 3-1 lead, as people held their collective breaths at the All England Club. That lead quickly became 4-2 with Roddick on serve!
Then it was 5-2 with Murray on serve. Two serves later, the gap was closed to 5-4 but Roddick served for the match. It soon became 6-4, as people couldn't stand to watch! But Murray responded, taking things to 6-5 in the tiebreak. But Roddick, with the poise of a champ, closed the deal, winning the match: 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
In the end, Roddick tallied 21 aces, 64 winners, 1 double fault and 24 unforced errors. Murray ended with: 25 aces, 76 winners, 5 double faults and 20 unforced errors. Congratulations to American Andy Roddick for stunning Andy Murray and earning a shot at a Wimbledon title against the immortal Roger Federer on Sunday!
Murray was trying to become the first Brit since Bunny Austin in 1938 to advance to the Wimbledon men’s final, while Roddick, a former world number one 2003 US Open champ, broke Murray in the final game of the first set.
