Serena Williams and Venus Williams Eliminated from Beijing 2008: The world’s No. 4 seeded, Serena Williams, who’s yet to win a singles medal in Olympic competitions, will have to wait until London 2012 to have another shot. Thursday evening, in the women’s singles (quarterfinals), Elena Dementieva of Russia eliminated the American by 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Meanwhile, Venus Williams was also ousted by an underdog, China’s Na Li.

Going into their quarterfinals matches, at BodogLife.com, Serena Williams was a -330 betting odds (Money Line) favorite against Elena Dementieva (+230), and Venus (-400) over Na Li (+275).

After going 3 full rounds upset-free in the women’s singles competition, Serena was the first victim to fall. Russia’s Elena Dementieva, winner of a silver medal in the 2000 games in Sydney, was able to bounce back after losing the first set 3-6 to Serena.

However, in the 3rd and final set, Dementieva picked up her game and took it to a level that Serena simply couldn’t match. In that decisive stanza, Dementieva raced out to an early 5-0 lead, and never relinquished it.

As the clock stroke midnight in Beijing, it indicated 2-time gold-medallist, Venus Williams, she would not be going for a third gold in 2008. Venus, who won gold medals in women’s singles and doubles at Sydney games in 2000, was the final casualty of an evening that saw her sister, Serena, and Roger Federer sent packing. China's own Na Li completed the upset, and moves on.
