Rafael Nadal vs. Andreas Seppi 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group: Rafael Nadal’s return from knee injury was short-lived in Montreal, as Juan Martin Del Potro stunned the former world No.1 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Rogers Cup a week and a half ago.

This year has been a very tough one for the former world No.1. Rafa started the ’09 campaign by winning the first Grand Slam of the year, 2009 Australian Open, but everything has gone downhill ever since. Knee injuries haven’t allowed the Spaniard to fully fulfill his capabilities. From falling short of winning a record-breaking 5th consecutive French Open title to not being able to defend his Wimbledon championship, it has been a dreadful year.

Just when you thought it was bad for Nadal it got worse, as Andy Murray has overtaken him for the world’s second rank behind Roger Federer. Rafael Nadal is now the world’s No.3 player in the world. “It’s only a number,” Nadal said Monday. “I hope to be ready in the future to come back to No. 2 or to be in the top position… No. 3 is a very good number, too,” he said with a smile.

Nadal has one more chance to prepare his body and gear up for the final Grand Slam of the year, which also happens to be the only major he has yet to capture in his already illustrious career. “Sure, the U.S. Open is very important,” Rafa stated, “but after the U.S. Open remains a lot of the season, and I would like to be ready to play a good end of the season.”

“Andy (Murray) and myself have both benefited from Rafa being injured,” Federer said. “We both took advantage of it.

“Now, he’s back, I’m back playing again after a few weeks. Everybody seems healthy again, and that can only be a good thing for the rest of the season.”
