Novak Djokovic (7/4) – began the 2013 season by defeating Andy Murray in the final of the 2013 Australian Open to win a record third consecutive Australian Open trophy and the sixth Grand Slam of his career. Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal beat Djokovic 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 9-7 in four hours and 37 minutes in the French Open semifinal.

Rafael Nadal (7/2) – won the 2013 French Open after beating Djokovic in the semifinal and Ferrer in the final. His match with Djokovic was widely considered one of the greatest clay court matches ever played, as Nadal came back from down a break in the fifth set to take out a hard-fought 4-hour, 37-minute victory. However, because of the nuances of how rankings are calculated, his world ranking dropped to No. 5.

Andy Murray (7/2) – trying to win his second Major in a row, at the 2013 Australian Open Murray set up a semi final clash with Roger Federer. After exchanging sets, Murray eventually prevailed in 5 sets, recording his first Grand Slam tournament triumph over Federer. With this victory, each member of the ATP’s most dominant quartet of the previous four years (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray) had beaten the other three at the Majors. This victory set up Murray’s third consecutive Major final appearance, and second in a row against Novak Djokovic. After taking the first set in a tiebreak, Murray was eventually defeated in four sets. Murray withdrew from the 2013 French Open due to back injury. Murray eventually raised his level at the 2013Aegon Championship and won in three to set up a final against Marin Čilić of Croatia, his third consecutive final on grass courts. He came from behind again to beat Čilić in three sets to claim his third title at Queen’s Club.

Roger Federer (5/1) – reach his first final of the year in Rome Masters, but was crushed there by the defending champion Rafael Nadal. Roland Garros was also a disappointment for Federer, losing to an inspired Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 3 easy sets in the quarterfinals. He has yet to win a title prior to the grass season. He will open grass court campaign in the Gerry Weber Open, where he will also play doubles with good friend Tommy Haas. Despite his disappointing result in 2013, he is aiming to repeat the same success 10 years ago during the grass court swing.

Rafael Nadal’s quest for an eighth French Open title nearly came to end yesterday morning as top ranked Novak Djokovic took the Spaniard to a fifth set. Nadal eventually prevailed in the epic semifinals matchup, defeating Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), 9-7.

Most tennis fans believe the battle between Djokovic and Nadal was the true championship match, but David Ferrer, who is presently fifth in the ATP rankings, will have his opportunity to refute those sentiments.

Ferrer, who is seeking his first major championship, is playing, perhaps, the best tennis of his life at the age of 31. The Valencia native owns a 37-9 match record this season and he earned his sixth straight sets victory of the French Open yesterday, knocking off a tough Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to advance to his first ever Grand Slam final.

Ferrer has experienced very little success opposite Nadal, though. The pair have battled 23 times in their careers; Ferrer won three of the first seven meetings, but he is 1-15 in the last 16. Nadal last fell to Ferrer in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Australian Open, losing in straight sets 4-6, 2-6, 3-6.

Rafael Nadal needed four sets to get past his first two French Open opponents, but he has dispatched his last three challengers in straight sets. Ninth seeded Stanislas Wawrinka served as Nadal’s latest victim, and he hardly presented the Spaniard with a challenge. Nadal breezed through Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 after slamming 31 winners and committing just 17 unforced errors. Wawrinka played a tremendous part in his own demise, hitting into 40 unforced errors.

Novak Djokovic used four sets to reach the French Open quarters, defeating Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, but he knocked off Germany’s Tommy Haas 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the quarterfinals to earn his fourth straight sets victory of the tournament.

Tomorrow’s match between Djokovic and Nadal will mark their fifth career meeting at Roland Garros and their second in the last two years. Nadal thwarted Djokovic’s big for a career Grand Slam last June, taking out the Serbian 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in the final. Nadal’s victory represented his seven French Open title and his 11th major championship.

In 34 previous meetings with Djokovic, Nadal has produced a 19-15 record; however, Djokovic, who currently sits atop the ATP Men’s Single rankings, snapped a three match losing streak to Nadal when the pair battled in the final at Monte Carlo in mid-April. The 26 year old Belgrade native beat Nadal 6-2, 7-6 on the clay courts of Monaco for his third singles title of the season.

Rafael Nadal’s assault on the French Open started in 2005 when he won his first title at Roland Garros. Top ranked Novak Djokovic represents the biggest threat to Nadal, and he is a significant one. Djokovic, who would complete a career Grand Slam with a Roland Garros title, took Nadal to a fourth set in last year’s French Open final and he defeated Nadal in the 1000 Madrid final (clay) in April.

Nadal holds a 19-15 edge in 34 career meetings with Djokovic; he is 11-3 opposite Djokovic on a clay surface. Nadal and Djokovic are slated to meet in the 2013 French Open semifinals should they both advance that far.

She played well enough the rest of the season to maintain her position atop the WTA standings, but she did have difficulty getting past Serena Williams as she fell to the American at Madrid, Wimbledon, the Olympics, and U.S. Open.

Maria Sharapova (7-1): Sharapova returned to prominence in a big way last season, completing a career Grand Slam by taking her first title at Roland Garros. The Russian native also reached the finals at the Australian Open and the semifinals at the U.S. Open. Sharapova secured her one and only Australian Open title in 2008.

Novak Djokovic got through after tough opening sets over Nikolay Davydenko and Marin Cilic in his first two rounds, Djokovic looked sharp during his quarter-final win over No. 5 seed Gael Monfils on Friday night, winning nine straight games from 2-all in the first set before closing out the Frenchman, 62 61. "I have played the best match of the tournament, no doubt,” Djokovic said. "I had a difficult game at two-all to hold my serve. After that, when I made the first break, it was incredible. Nine games in a row. I'm happy to see my game is progressing each day. Djokovic is an amazing 51-1 on the season, including a perfect 25-0 in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events this season (winning 19 of those matches in straight sets, being pushed to three sets six times). He is trying to become the first player to win five ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in a season (since 1990).

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga has already beaten two Top 8 seeds to get here – No. 3 seed Roger Federer and No. 8 seed Nicolas Almagro – and will now break back into the Top 10 by virtue of this week’s performance. He leads Djokovic in their head-to-head series, 5-3, but in their only 2011 meeting it was Djokovic who won, in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. “The last match was very close, very intense, very important for both of us,” Djokovic said.

Rafael Nadal has 10 Grand Slam titles, two of which he obtained on the Wimbledon grass, and he owns a 16-11 record in 27 career meetings with second ranked Novak Djokovic. However, the Serbian, who will take over the ATP's top spot regardless of tomorrow's result, has dominated him of late.

Novak Djokovic has won four straight matches against the Spaniard with the two most recent victories coming on clay, a surface Nadal has owned since 2005.

If his recent history opposite Djokovic were not enough to scare Nadal, perhaps Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's assessment of the Serb following Friday's semis will do the trick.

Tsonga thought his own semifinals performance would have "beat everybody today, but not Djokovic, because he just played unbelievable. He was everywhere. He returns unbelievable all the time on his baseline."

Djokovic's "unbelievable" semifinal play is nothing new as he has been nearly perfect all season long, posting a 47-1 match record. Djokovic's only loss came in the French Open semis last month where the greatest tennis player ever, Roger Federer, ousted him in four remarkable sets.

Nadal, despite the emminent loss of his top ranking, has played fantastic this year as well. The ultra-quick Mallorca native is 51-7 and he has secured three singles titles, including his sixth French Open crown.

In spite of Djokovic's recent control over Nadal, the 24 year old can expect the Spaniard's best tomorrow. Nadal, when fully healthy, has a Grand Slam game like no other. If Djokovic is to garner his first Wimbledon title and his third career major, he will have to earn it the hard way, just like he did the No. 1 ranking.

Maria Sharapova had not advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon since reaching the semifinals at the 2006 Championships, until yesterday that is when she ousted Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 6-3 in the semis.

Sharapova, who has cruised through all comers in straight sets this tournament, had more unforced errors and fewer winners than her German counterpart; however, she outperformed Lisicki in the service game as well as in break point conversions. Sharapova won 22 of her 32 first serve chances and she converted six of her 10 break point opportunities. 

Sharapova's effort earned her a second Wimbledon finals appearance and her first since winning the championship as a 17 year old in 2004. Should Sharapova go on to win tomorrow, it will mark her fourth career Grand Slam title.

For Kvitova, tomorrow's match will represent her first Grand Slam finals appearance. The 21 year old, who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon last year, upset fourth ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in securing the career milestone.

The left-handed Kvitova, whose unorthodox shots have flummoxed her Wimbledon competition, had nine aces and an amazing 40 winners in turning back Azarenka.

Tomorrow's championship will serve as the second meeting between the sixth ranked Sharapova and Kvitova. The two squared off in Memphis last year where the Russian beat the youngster in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 on a hard court surface.

Andy Murray has cleared the Rafael Nadal hurdle four times in his career, but he has never done so at Wimbledon, where the Spaniard has turned him back in straight sets on two occasions.

The pair faced off in the semifinals at the All England Club as recently as last year when Nadal beat the Brit 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. The match, which lasted 142 minutes, featured 15 Murray aces to Nadal's four; however, Murray landed just 55 of his 92 first serves, thus robbing himself of a number of scoring chances.

Murray did much the same last month when he and Nadal tangled in the semifinals at the French Open. The lanky 24 year old performed better, connecting on 67 of his 104 first serve opportunities, but he was still a far cry from equaling Nadal, who hit 87 of 119.

If Murray, who beat Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in Wednesday's quarters, can keep that aspect of his game under control tomorrow, he may be able to thwart Nadal like he did at the 2008 U.S. Open and 2010 Australian Open.

Nadal, who is chasing his third Wimbledon and 11th Grand Slam titles, has struggled at times in his last two matches as the 25 year old needed four sets to get by both Juan Martin Del Potro and Mardy Fish.

Still, beating Nadal will not be easy, something Murray well knows given that he has lost to the four time Wimbledon finalist 11 times.
